Lattimer Gallery is a historic, family-owned and operated Indigenous art gallery established over 35 years ago near Granville Island in Vancouver. They sought our help in redesigning and updating their branding and Shopify website, the latter of which was long overdue for a revamp.
We began with an express branding project. The client requested that we preserve the sun emblem from their original logo, which was created by artist Beau Dick for our client’s grandmother when she originally founded the gallery. We used the emblem and a complementary font to form the new logo. We also updated their colour palette from black and white to cream, warm brown, red ochre, and a soft green, elevating the brand into the modern era while better reflecting its essence.
Once branding had been finalized, we began the web build portion of the project, which was custom-developed on Shopify Plus. A challenge emerged with the addition of Metafields and Metaobjects. Lattimer functions as an archive of artists and their artwork as much as a retail space. Since the gallery has worked with hundreds of Indigenous artists since its inception, featuring thousands of products in its catalogue, adding each component was a complex yet necessary task. Now that Lattimer’s website has this functionality enabled, it will remain future-proof for the foreseeable future, as well as more user-friendly and easier for their team to manage.
Our work with Lattimer Gallery resulted in much positive feedback from the client and their customers, and has ensured that this incredible Vancouver institution will remain digitally secure for years to come.
