It’s 2019. Every business is on social media. Some are using it effectively, some are actively hurting their brand with their ham-fisted efforts. We’re all aware by now that social media can be one of the most impactful marketing tools out there. However, it’s not enough to just use it as a broadcast medium for your products. Great care should be given to what types of content you’re posting on there. It’s this level of care that separates social media success stories from businesses that just shouldn’t bother.
Plotting Your Social Strategy
Social media is attractive to marketers because there’s no barrier to entry. Anyone can set up an account and populate it with content for free. The challenge is finding a distinctive voice that slices through the clutter. It’s ok to feel stumped by this task. Finding your voice and learning how to stand out is a trial and error process. You aren’t going to strike gold immediately and you will have some stumbles. Here are some quick pointers to help you find the right social media marketing mix:
Personality is OK
A common mistake by marketers is to remove their personality from their marketing. On social media, feel free to be yourself. Your followers are more likely to identify with your brand if you have a personality they can connect with. Don’t try to be someone you aren’t, or veer toward statements that could be considered too racy or edgy. Simply use the language you would use when talking to customers in person. Social media is unmatched at building relationships and personality is a huge aspect of this.
Consider the “Why”
A question you’ll need to be able to answer well is why should followers engage with your brand on social media? What is it you bring to the table that will make people interested? I would consider this one of the most important aspects of social media marketing and one many marketers fall down on. Try to highlight what makes you and your business unique. You have to provide something of value to your followers to keep them engaged. A solid starting point is to think of your account as a communal room where people can meet to have a chat. If you’re moving from group to group trying to sell your wares, people with get tired of your behaviour pretty quickly. Instead, take the time to engage each visitor in conversation, share interesting reading you find and tell good stories.
Get Creative
Instagram has highlighted how popular photographs are on social media. Images grab the attention immediately and encourage a response from visitors. When attention spans are fleeting, utilizing images, video or other visual tools is important. We’re huge fans of a tool called Canva. This site allows users to quickly create visually appealing graphics and overlays for images that look professional. The best part? It’s easy to use and requires very little training. It’s possible to pick up the basics in five minutes.
